Post-Festival Treat: Pre-Premiere with Director Lauri-Matti Parppei in Attendance!

Feeling the post-festival blues? No worries—there’s more to come! On Monday, September 8 at 5:30 PM, Oulu Music Video Festival brings you an exclusive post-festival screening at Elokuvateatteri Star. OMVF is proud to present the Oulu pre-premiere of Lauri-Matti Parppei’s tender debut feature There Is a Light That Never Goes Out (2025).

Premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, Parppei’s radiant debut is a film about the burning force of friendship and creativity. Known also as a musician (Musta valo) and music video director, Parppei composed some of the film’s music already while writing the script—but the final pieces emerged through collaboration in front of the camera.

“I wanted to compose music that feels both strange and approachable. It was important that even the oddest experiments would look joyful and exciting,” Parppei says.

All the music in the film is performed live on screen by the actors—there is no traditional background score.

The warmly received drama follows professional flutist Pauli (Samuel Kujala), who returns to his childhood home in Rauma. There, he reconnects with his old schoolmate Iiris (Anna Rosaliina Kauno), who persistently persuades him to join her in making strange music no one knew they wanted to hear. Having once pursued perfection, Pauli begins to find comfort in peculiar sounds.

The evening opens with Parppei’s short musical The Last Day (2020). Lauri-Matti Parppei will attend the screening and take questions from the audience afterwards. Tickets are €13.50, available from Elokuvateatteri Star. Buy tickets here.
