OMVF dedicates this years’ special screenings to exploring the fan culture. We show fans and fandom from multiple angles – the floor is given to the avid enthusiasts, and the program also includes artist documentaries made especially for the fans.

We are proud to present our long-time favorite: the Danish music video director Martin de Thurah and his retrospective. De Thurah has rapidly risen into the master league of international music video directors with his captivating style – seen in his works for artists such as Fever Ray, Glasvegas and Editors. De Thurah will attend the festival as a special guest, presenting his music videos, commercials and short films, and he’s available for Q&A.

The artist documentaries are headlined by the freshly released It Might Get Loud, receiving its Finnish premiere at the Oulu Music Video Festival. The film stars guitar legends from three generations; Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), The Edge (U2) and Jack White (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, Dead Weather) – and of course the object of their passion: the electric guitar.

The festival program also explores the world of the fans themselves with films concentrating on the fandom of Kiss, Depeche Mode, Kate Bush and Morrissey. We also get to know the underground culture of air drummers in Adventures of Power and see how fandom grows even in the shadow of the Taliban regime as the Idols format takes Afghanistan by storm in Afghan Star.

Travelling to Japan, Africa and the past

This years’ festival also takes a look at Japan and Africa in their own special screenings. Package Deals, a New York -based music and film screening series, present a premiere selection of Japanese music videos and short films for OMVF. In addition to these, the festival also presents anime music videos made by fans of Japanese animation, and the film Tokyology which gives an effective introduction to the fountains of Japanese popular culture.

Africa is represented by two films that show two specific moments where African and Western cultures meet and collide. Soul Power is a film about the Zaire 1974 concert, also known as the Woodstock of black music, which brought together all the soul superstars, James Brown included. Youssou N’Dour: I Bring What I Love is a story about the difficulties that the Senegalese superstar has to face when he tries to combine the sacred and the secular in his music.

This year the craving for classics is taken care by Heikki Salo (cj hekxsa) with his compilation of music film classics that haven’t been seen in theaters for a while. Hekxsa’s list of films includes the reggae-star-packed Rockers that depicts the Jamaican music scene in 1978, and Stop Making Sense - the legendary Talking Heads’ live performance from 1984.

The Silakka Clubs feature artists rarely seen in Oulu

OMVF takes the credit for bringing in bands and artists who make their first gigs in Oulu. The rock club 45 Special presents Pooma, one of the most elegant shoegaze bands in Finland, happily swinging pop & folk group Elias and the Wizzkids (SWE) at their first gig in Finland, and the fast-rising indie rock name, Murmansk. More intimate Never Grow Old presents Sami Kukka, known for his minimalistic expression, Vuk, a combination of experimental pop and folk and the DJ collective Mofayah Sound System.

The electronic music event, Time Tunnel presents two rising stars of Finnish electro, TV OFF and Ka So Re. The evening is crowned by the TOP BILLIN DJ collective whose freewheeling sets combine all styles and genres.
